Excerpt:

Jennifer West strode down Main Street with her Penn State crew; girls she loved and trusted with her whole heart. Especially Brooke Stone. She eyed her best friend, loving how beautifully confident she appeared. Brooke needed this night to blow off steam. Life had thrown her friend a shit-ton of curveballs after losing her uncle to cancer and stuck with his debts.

But no more.

Tonight Jennifer and Brooke would shake off their hectic workweeks and have some much-needed fun.

Mike waited for her. He was about average height with wavy brown hair and sparkling blue eyes. So lean, the guy could work a pair of jeans. They’d met after her decision to try skydiving; a feat she’d enjoyed. He’d been her instructor, and they’d hit it off. One drink. Two drinks. They’d ended up parting their zippers.

He met her and her girls at the door of her favorite bar, Looney’s. His squad of dudes swarmed the front entrance, looking all hot and magnificent. This would be a great night, full of fun and excitement.

She had faith.

Mike snatched her up in his arms, laying a hot kiss across her lips. Nope. He did nothing for her—like their night had been. Stale. Lifeless. Forgettable.

She knew deep down, she couldn’t continue this path of guys and too many nights. But she hated to think that her life would boil down to her own company in her high-rise apartment…alone. Yet she wasn’t game for more forgettable moments either.

Something had to change.

As her party people moved ahead of her, she lagged behind. Not that she minded. There was no reason to appear too eager.

Out of the corner of her eye, Jennifer saw him. The him she thought she’d never see again.

Donavan.

He is here?

Her lusty reaction flamed.

She chalked up her horn bee response to him as normal. He hit at least 6’4 of pure muscle—the kind that resembled The Rock, but hotter. His close cropped hair added to his sexy factor too. The pure chocolate sin of his eyes held a darkness beyond color, a mystery she’d never solved in their brief time together. He had a Roman nose with high cheekbones down to firm lips. He had a mouth that knew every inch of her too. They had hooked up. She wouldn’t think about him now. Maybe he’d leave if she ignored him.

She had to forget him and she’d make herself. Her brain was on board with that concept, but tell that to her heart. Giving herself a mental shake, she would turn the corner on his dark and dangerous vibe.

Donavan’s eyes narrowed and his firm, drive-me-wild lips were set in a firm line. He towered over her, making her feel all soft and feminine.

He is too close.

She hated that she cared.

He invaded her personal space, his hand enclosing her wrist. “I need to speak with you, Red.”

Jennifer jerked her arm away. “I have nothing to say to you,” she volleyed, taking a step forward, trying to escape him.

“What game are you playing at?” he growled. “I have something serious to say.”

He crowded her, as if he were trying to intimidate her. Her jaw hardened. “I’m sorry, do I know you?”

She knew she was being bitchy, but he chose now to act as if he gave a crap? That he knew her? No, not happening. Butt hurt, she would not be. As far as she knew, he didn’t even know her name. That wasn’t grounds for an urgent conversation.

Beneath Her Skin

Brooke Stone runs a slumping hot air balloon business and pride keeps her from asking for help. Her last flight of the day introduces her to Damon Sinclair. He is mysterious, sexy, and he wants her to work for him. But there is deception at play. Someone is gunning for her, strategically placing Brooke at the center of danger, while Damon uses all his government resources to help her. She is two steps away from a break down, yet her new savior proves she needs a miracle, and she cannot help but hold onto his dust-devil storm, awestruck and seduced.

No matter their sensual cravings, trouble is coming… and so is the truth.

Excerpt

“Here we go—welcome to the fishbowl,” Damon said, leading her out into a semi-dark hallway lined with glass walls and various rooms.

There were conference tables with groups of men and women in deep discussion, and the other rooms reminded her of a James Bond movie with different gadgets undergoing testing. She was awestruck as Damon continued to lead her down the hallway, finally coming to stop in front of another conference room lined with wall-to-floor TV screens inside a video conference call with more S-Tec employees deep in an unfettered focus. A control panel was located on the outside of the glass wall and he flipped a speaker switch, filling the hallway with the sounds of the occupant’s discussion, though Damon immediately lowered the volume, but didn’t look at her.

“This is where all the aerospace ideas are birthed into existence,” Damon began. “Or where problems are worked out, but unfortunately, I haven’t the time to babysit the project as much as I’d like. And it’s a huge deal, but my time is spread thin. We have government contracts underway and I need someone to monitor transcripts of meetings, verify that problems are resolved, and file necessary documents with different governmental departments. Most of all, I need you to be my liaison. I need an invisible force.”

Finally, he turned and she cleared her throat. “Invisible force? You mean you don’t want anyone to know I what I’m doing. ”

His lips curved into a delicious smile. “As I mentioned, I need to switch tactics and make my decisions less public until my desired release of information. I want you to be my Aerospace Security Advisor, which you will receive a hefty salary, an office adjacent to mine and a company car and an apartment. I will need you on-call.”

She had not even accepted, but it was pretty much a done deal with her hand still in his and heat sparking up her arm. Damon had maneuvered her into a boxed corner.

“I… I haven’t said yes.”

He grinned wide with amusement lighting his sea-beauty eyes. “But you will,” he said so confidently with a matter-of-fact arrogance.

A sparkle of irritation burst through her stomach and she dropped his hand, taking a step back. “While I thank you for the proposal, any Joe-blow off the street can shuffle papers and answer a few calls or report to you. What do you really want?”

He descended so fast, pushing her up against the glass wall, his stomach was rock hard against hers, as he placed each of his hands on the glass surface at either side of her head. Her breath stopped and the coolness at her back was just what her skin needed after long, aching minutes of flushing excitement.

“I can’t lie—I want you close,” he rasped, brushing his lips across hers. “I want you so close no one will even know you’re here. I want you to teach me all your rules so I can break every one of them—just to be in the same room with you. This may not be the most ethical way of doing business, Ms. Stone, but the fact is… I can’t stay away from you.”

Character Insight: Connie Fraser from On Paid Leave

Connie Fraser?

  • Who is she?
  • Why is she in the story?
  • What the future holds?

These are questions that have come to my attention and I’ll do my very best to address them. Sometimes when constructing a story, some characters are planned, and others are not. Connie Fraser first appeared, in my mind, as someone quite different. As I began to write her into On Paid Leave, she became a comfort for my main character, Shawn Angel. If you’ve read my mystery novel, then you’ll know that Shawn suffers from PSTD. She’s hair trigger on her emotions and the least little thing sends her into a swirl of emotions.

  1. Connie Fraser represents Shawn’s past–a tether to Shawn’s mother. In On Paid Leave, a once upon a day friendship is noted between Connie and Terry Angel (Shawn’s mother). For Shawn, spending a little time with Connie uproots some past feelings for our main girl. It’s a test of her emotions to stay strong and not fall apart, even when memories threaten to overcome her.
  2. (Spoiler Alert!) Connie is in the story as a basic Red Herring. The story begins with obvious issues with a stalker serial killer, but Shawn is unaware of all the events. Our detective tends to follow any scent of danger or intrigue and the weirdness of the old Fraser family sets off a few alarm bells.
  3. I see Connie throughout the series. She’s not a front runner character, but she’ll definitely add some peace and perspective to Shawn’s life.

On Paid Leave

Suffering from PTSD with a snarky view of life, Detective Shawn Angel is forced to face her internal demons before she loses her job. When she heads out of town, she plans to conquer fears with a little rest and relaxation, but she’s a trouble magnet. She swears it’s not her fault. It’s almost as if someone is purposefully tormenting her.

Confronted by her past love, Shawn must surrender her pride and work with Leo Grayson. He yanks Shawn out of her safe bubble, complicating matters in his sexy way, yet finding a killer proves to be easier than rekindling their romance. As the intrigue climbs dangerous levels, Shawn tugs on her badass, fully prepared to handle things her way. She’s supposedly on vacation, but now, she’s out to catch a killer…

What other readers are saying:

  • Get ready for a funny, emotional, action-packed mystery with a sassy lead female with a hilarious inner monologue! Investigator Shawn Angel is suffering form PTSD after almost dying at the hands of a serial killer. Even after months, she’s not ready to go back on active duty – she’s not even capable of sleeping outside of the bathtub (handy gun named Joan by her side) for fear of leaving herself vulnerable to attack – so she takes a little trip to her sister’s house in her hometown to get away for a bit. Reuniting with her ex is a plus, but being stalked by the man who wants her dead is a definite minus.I absolutely adored this story. It was super fast-paced and fun to read. Like I said before, Shawn’s inner monologue is hilarious, and the random things she comes up with had be cracking up with laughter. But then it was also quite emotional, dealing with a trauma that psychologically scarred this poor woman who had always been so strong. It’s a good message that even the toughest of women are allowed to have moments of weakness. Or maybe that even women with weaknesses can still pick themselves up and be strong. One of those two. There doesn’t have to be an either/or with strength and weakness in a powerful woman – there; that’s it. Great message to send out with this story.
  • The plot is original, with twists, turns and surprises. Told in alternating voices, I got to know what each person was thinking and feeling. That made the story much more enjoyable. I really liked Shawn, she is down to earth and all around likable, flaws and all. She tries to relax and take a vacation, yet she still decides to help solve a crime (even if her life is in danger). I highly recommend On Paid Leave to those who love a great mystery.
  • This story was impossible to put down; it evoked real emotions as you walk through Shawn’s issues with her. Absolute 5-star must-read.
  • Detective Shawn Angel suffers from PTSD. She goes on vacation yo unwind and relax. She did not expect a missing person and murder. She decides to help her ex boyfriend in the investigation. Soon she finds herself in trouble and might end up being the next victim! An original plot with plenty of twists, turns, and surprises to keep you in suspense. The story is told in alternating voices. I highly recommend to anyone who loves a great mystery story.
