Saturday Fun: Desperate Whispers by Jessa Ely

Dane Corbett had left Eva Falls in pursuit of dreams. When he is drawn back to the very place from which he ran, he discovers the mayor’s daughter lying in a ditch. She is not the same vibrant woman he left behind, and he wants answers.

The demons of Rachel Ryan’s past cloud her present, yet her carefully built walls of isolation weaken as she is drawn to Dane. She fights the desperate whispers telling her to flee, wanting instead to surrender her fears.

Reaching beyond shame and sorrow, they discover a love that even a deadly vendetta cannot destroy.

Excerpt:

Rachel slammed her front door with a force that shook the windows. Trust wasn’t easy for her, yet here she swayed in Judas type waters. How could Greta keep this from her? It wasn’t some minor detail.

Ethan Corbett had destroyed her.

He took her innocence, her trust, and her sanity. As far as she knew, Dane was unaware of his brother’s vicious action. Her parents had taken great pains to bury the whole incident.

She took four steps toward her shower before her front door opened, slamming behind her. Rachel whirled around to find Dane in her house. Her face heated up, and anger coursed through her. “Get out, Dane!” Yelling was a mistake. She grimaced under the pressure of her headache as streaks of pain powered through her temples, churning her stomach.

He took two steps toward her, but she retreated.

“Stop, Rachel,” he said softly. “You’re in pain, so let me help you. Maybe you need a doctor. I’ll take you.”

“No.”

“Please talk to me.”

Rachel snorted, her hands coming up to hold her head as if that was going to ward off the pain or the evil darkness. “I want to be left alone. This isn’t a good time.” The pain was excruciating. She felt so sick that she thought she might pass out.

“What’s going on, Rachel? Am I that much of a shock to you?” Dane asked, his voice biting. “I know we didn’t keep in touch, but I never expected this kind of reaction from you.”

Remorse ate at her. “Look, can’t you just—” She nearly fell to the floor as fiery pain burst through her head, but Dane grabbed her.

“Rachel!”

She gasped as he pulled her close. Anxiety overwhelmed her. The inner claws extended over her nerves, shaking out her fear as though wet laundry in need of drying. She was in his arms, and she was inexplicably scared. She knew she shouldn’t be afraid of him, so she closed her eyes against his concerned face, and she shut down, counting backward from one hundred.

“Damn it. You’re shaking, Rachel.” He led her over to the sofa and gently pulled her down onto his lap.

She surrendered to his kindness but still couldn’t open her eyes.

“Tell me what’s wrong, baby.” His hand caressed her back.

She focused on the glide of his hand, and the hated claws began to recede, leaving her strangely cocooned in an invisible net of safety. The shaking gave way to warmth. She couldn’t feel the inner stabbing pain. Dane had calmed the beast, but Rachel was afraid to open her eyes and disrupt the balance.

She sighed. “Can’t you just accept that eleven years is a long time and that people change? I’m not the same person you once knew.” His body wrapped her in a pocket of heaven, and his scent enveloped her with a unique familiarity. She couldn’t believe she was on his lap, enjoying his touch.

“I can accept anything.”

She tried to get up, but his arms tightened around her. “Dane, let me go.”

“Not yet. You’re still trembling.”

Review:

5 out of 5 ” This is a story of true love, tragic heartache, and the power to change the perception of others. When you love someone with all your heart, you will do anything to make things right, and Dane shows us the true meaning of conquering your demons, and showing others your true self. He’s an absolute heartbreaker, and there’s definitely some book boyfriend love going on. We should all be so lucky to have someone truly fight for us, no matter what anyone else thinks.” –Amazon Reviewer

Happy New Year to my dear readers and followers. As my first post of the new year, I wanted to wish you all a prosperous and healthy 2017. I won’t even mention the bad taste 2016 left behind. Moving on, right? Time to embrace the new year and hope for all things positive and good.

Current Projects

I’m working on two projects now. The first is my second mystery novel in the Shawn Angel series. The working title is…drum roll please…Run, Blogger, Run! I hesitate to give out my title too soon for the fear of changing my mind. But, I feel certain I’ll keep it. I even have a book blurb, but it’s too early to share it. I need time to revise it several times before I feel confident that it portrays my story accurately. I can say that Shawn shocks me sometimes with her humor. I can’t wait to have this book finished. 🙂 I might even have good news to share about my Nysein vampires.

New Year Writing Goals

I spent some time thinking about which projects I’d like to finish. I’ll keep you posted as things develop.

Mystery novel/On Paid Leave News–What happened to this book? As soon as I know, I’ll share a new publishing date.

Final Thoughts

In the words of Shawn Angel, I’ll leave you with this for the New Year…

I wanted to embrace each day. Live to the fullest. Wear a thong. Paint my lips red, if for no other reason than just because it clashed with my SpongeBob T-shirt. Life should be about taking risks and being happy. It was time to start living.

Current Project

I’m currently working on my second mystery novel. I actually had to start over because I decided to change directions and go another way. I think the story will flow smoother from here on out. I wrote the prologue, and I’m nearly finished with chapter one. Yay!! Just to keep things interesting, I wanted to share a few paragraphs. Please keep in mind it’s unedited and raw. Shawn Angel always keeps things lively with her quirky humor. 🙂

I shoved my laptop to the side as my sister, Violet, kissed me on the cheek. Her perfume about knocked me over. What the hell was she wearing? Formaldehyde? I didn’t hold my nose, but I grimaced. P-freaking-hew. We hugged briefly, feeling like I’d just been chloroformed. Or maybe I was headed into anaphylactic shock? Tough call. Either way, my eyes watered and my lungs burned.

“Hey,” I said, trying not to cough. “I’m so happy you could meet me for lunch.” I coughed, and then I turned my head to the side, gulping a deep breath. But all I could smell was her perfume stench.

Behind the Scenes Saturday

Current Project

My writing muse pulled me toward a novel I’d sketched out a few months ago. The working title is currently Love Unplugged. It’s inspired by the song, Girl Crush by Little Big Town. Now keep in mind the story is only inspired by a song, not actually the song. I’ve added my own unique twists and turns. It’s about a woman that loves a man out of reach, but finds herself face-to-face with him years later. I did have a preliminary blurb written, but I scrapped it. Hopefully, I’ll have it ready for next Saturday. I had originally intended for this book to be a short story, but… my characters have other ideas. I hope to have this completed in a few months.

Excerpt (Subject to change):

“I seem to recall twenty-five grand paid out to you by Raim’s record label,” Riven said, looking smug. “They thought it was good. The ballad stayed at number one for weeks.”

I gave a nervous chuckle, feeling my cheeks warm. Why I felt so embarrassed, I didn’t know. Probably because I didn’t believe in myself. All my life I’d been fighting for acceptance and love, but I didn’t want to think about that now. Or ever. Some things were better swept under the bar, rug, or any object for that matter.

Introducing Jessa Ely

It’s been a whirlwind few months! As you may recall, I mentioned three of my novels had been picked up by a publisher. I’ve been working hard to prepare my first book titled, Desperate Whispers. To keep the genres distinct, I’m writing under the pseudonym, Jessa Ely. My first book with Cobblestone Press released on August 15th. As an interesting side note, this was the second book I ever wrote eons ago. (When I say “eons,” I mean the first draft was written in 2001!) It gives me great pleasure to introduce Dane Corbett and Rachel Ryan from Eva Falls…
