As Mia Phillips watches her mother slip away from cancer, she bows under the pressure of unpaid bills and heartache. No amount of soul searching fills her empty bank account… or her indecision over the most breathtaking man. Cover Reveal: Under the Sun

Jennifer West lives a vibrant life, taking risks in her personal life…one man at a time. On her quest to find Mr. Right, she meets Jake Donavan. A man with some serious sex appeal. Yet he falls under the Mr. Wrong category. He’s an ex-black ops agent, working head of security for S-Tec. Jennifer’s mugging sends up a red flag, and Donavan works behind the scenes to discover her attacker. But there is something she doesn’t want him to discover, yet no secret can stay buried forever. As her stalker closes in, Donavan shows his gentle side—a man he hasn’t allowed himself to be in a long time.

Danger is rising and only one man may protect her…

Excerpt:

Jennifer West strode down Main Street with her Penn State crew; girls she loved and trusted with her whole heart. Especially Brooke Stone. She eyed her best friend, loving how beautifully confident she appeared. Brooke needed this night to blow off steam. Life had thrown her friend a shit-ton of curveballs after losing her uncle to cancer and stuck with his debts.

But no more.

Tonight Jennifer and Brooke would shake off their hectic workweeks and have some much-needed fun.

Mike waited for her. He was about average height with wavy brown hair and sparkling blue eyes. So lean, the guy could work a pair of jeans. They’d met after her decision to try skydiving; a feat she’d enjoyed. He’d been her instructor, and they’d hit it off. One drink. Two drinks. They’d ended up parting their zippers.

He met her and her girls at the door of her favorite bar, Looney’s. His squad of dudes swarmed the front entrance, looking all hot and magnificent. This would be a great night, full of fun and excitement.

She had faith.

Mike snatched her up in his arms, laying a hot kiss across her lips. Nope. He did nothing for her—like their night had been. Stale. Lifeless. Forgettable.

She knew deep down, she couldn’t continue this path of guys and too many nights. But she hated to think that her life would boil down to her own company in her high-rise apartment…alone. Yet she wasn’t game for more forgettable moments either.

Something had to change.

As her party people moved ahead of her, she lagged behind. Not that she minded. There was no reason to appear too eager.

Out of the corner of her eye, Jennifer saw him. The him she thought she’d never see again.

Donavan.

He is here?

Her lusty reaction flamed.

She chalked up her horn bee response to him as normal. He hit at least 6’4 of pure muscle—the kind that resembled The Rock, but hotter. His close cropped hair added to his sexy factor too. The pure chocolate sin of his eyes held a darkness beyond color, a mystery she’d never solved in their brief time together. He had a Roman nose with high cheekbones down to firm lips. He had a mouth that knew every inch of her too. They had hooked up. She wouldn’t think about him now. Maybe he’d leave if she ignored him.

She had to forget him and she’d make herself. Her brain was on board with that concept, but tell that to her heart. Giving herself a mental shake, she would turn the corner on his dark and dangerous vibe.

Donavan’s eyes narrowed and his firm, drive-me-wild lips were set in a firm line. He towered over her, making her feel all soft and feminine.

He is too close.

She hated that she cared.

He invaded her personal space, his hand enclosing her wrist. “I need to speak with you, Red.”

Jennifer jerked her arm away. “I have nothing to say to you,” she volleyed, taking a step forward, trying to escape him.

“What game are you playing at?” he growled. “I have something serious to say.”

He crowded her, as if he were trying to intimidate her. Her jaw hardened. “I’m sorry, do I know you?”

She knew she was being bitchy, but he chose now to act as if he gave a crap? That he knew her? No, not happening. Butt hurt, she would not be. As far as she knew, he didn’t even know her name. That wasn’t grounds for an urgent conversation.

What other readers are saying:

  • Get ready for a funny, emotional, action-packed mystery with a sassy lead female with a hilarious inner monologue! Investigator Shawn Angel is suffering form PTSD after almost dying at the hands of a serial killer. Even after months, she’s not ready to go back on active duty – she’s not even capable of sleeping outside of the bathtub (handy gun named Joan by her side) for fear of leaving herself vulnerable to attack – so she takes a little trip to her sister’s house in her hometown to get away for a bit. Reuniting with her ex is a plus, but being stalked by the man who wants her dead is a definite minus.I absolutely adored this story. It was super fast-paced and fun to read. Like I said before, Shawn’s inner monologue is hilarious, and the random things she comes up with had be cracking up with laughter. But then it was also quite emotional, dealing with a trauma that psychologically scarred this poor woman who had always been so strong. It’s a good message that even the toughest of women are allowed to have moments of weakness. Or maybe that even women with weaknesses can still pick themselves up and be strong. One of those two. There doesn’t have to be an either/or with strength and weakness in a powerful woman – there; that’s it. Great message to send out with this story.
  • The plot is original, with twists, turns and surprises. Told in alternating voices, I got to know what each person was thinking and feeling. That made the story much more enjoyable. I really liked Shawn, she is down to earth and all around likable, flaws and all. She tries to relax and take a vacation, yet she still decides to help solve a crime (even if her life is in danger). I highly recommend On Paid Leave to those who love a great mystery.
  • This story was impossible to put down; it evoked real emotions as you walk through Shawn’s issues with her. Absolute 5-star must-read.
  • Detective Shawn Angel suffers from PTSD. She goes on vacation yo unwind and relax. She did not expect a missing person and murder. She decides to help her ex boyfriend in the investigation. Soon she finds herself in trouble and might end up being the next victim! An original plot with plenty of twists, turns, and surprises to keep you in suspense. The story is told in alternating voices. I highly recommend to anyone who loves a great mystery story.

Crossing my arms, I made no move to grab my duffel, although the chill of the tile floor seeped through my bare feet and up my calves. I was slowly freezing with only a wisp of a gown covering my nakedness. I could envision what it was like to be a stripper right before they ripped off their tear-away clothes, but there was no sexy music and no way would I shake my tush on the hospital bed for a few bucks. Even I had to draw the line somewhere.

“You froze my boxers?”

I shrugged. “That’s what you get for ratting me out,” I said, thumbing toward Leo, who had the wherewithal to nip my digit, and then smooth a kiss over my skin. My toes curled, damn him. “Next time, keep your trap shut. Just sayin’!” I moved a little away from my man-crush before I forgot decorum and jumped him in the kitchen. Manners were key.

“Cruel, woman,” Hernandez said, shaking his head. “Seriously, couldn’t you come with something else?”

He took the bowl of frozen heroes from the freezer, setting it on the counter. Iced Batman and frozen Captain America shorts clunked with a thud. I hope Cap didn’t mind the refreeze?

Guest Post: “SPOTLIGHT” Author, Garrett Addison

If you love mystery and suspense, here’s a little treat for you. In helping RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB PROFILE, PROMOTE & PROPEL Indie Authors, I’m hosting Author, Garrett Addison today. Join me in welcoming him as he travels on his Blog Tour. Get cozy and settle in for a few moments…

Book Cover

Enter the world of an unnamed family man struggling in his pursuit of a work/life balance. Too much travel at the whims of his tyrannical boss, known variously as Stalin and ‘the Anti-Christ’, has left him failing at work and at home, but after his wife prophetically warns that his next trip will be different, he is suddenly a world apart from his usual self. Confident, capable and unafraid of his manager, opportunities abound as he embraces his altered state away from home.

What begins as a quest to reclaim his career and satisfy his ego soon descends into the pursuit for revenge on his boss. With nothing but success in his wake and seemingly limitless potential at his disposal, it’s only fitting when he is coerced to work with his nemesis in a remote corner of the world. It’s more than just a chance to get even after years of abuse, more than the opportunity for a confrontation; a final solution to what he sees as the bane of his life is on offer. What could possibly go wrong when he’s in his prime? Succeed or fail, either way this trip will be the making of him or the end of him.

Sometimes to get the measure of your life you just need a break from being yourself… because nothing lasts forever.

Who is she, really?

When I conjured up an unlikeable character for the evil boss in ‘The Traveller’, I always assumed that my readers would see her as being 100% fiction. I tried to make her easily hateable, but believable, and I think she’s just the kind of character that I’d choose to avoid if I met her in the street.

Still, I’ve been inundated with of a lot of questions interrogation about who she really is.  There seems to be unilateral acceptance that someone like that must be based on someone I know, and this has led to unwarranted scrutiny of my past professional associations and colleagues.  The honest truth is she’s not, absolutely not, based on one person.

Instead, my story needed a villain and rather than just put someone I know into print, I fabricated what (or who) I saw as being the best antagonist for my story and my main character.   For this reason, my evil boss epitomises the pleasure I find in writing because my written world is limited only by what I can think up; it’s wholly up to me to paint my characters with depth and to support my story.  If I need an ‘evil’ character, I need to ‘show it’ and to that end, everything my main character in ‘The Traveller’ reveals to paint a picture of long suppressed loathing is pure fiction, not a collection of observations about a real person.

So sorry to disappoint, but the woman identified as ‘the bitch’ and ‘Stalin’ in my story isn’t anyone I know, but I’m far from being offended at the suggestion.  If anything, I’m liable to be flattered that readers think I’ve captured ‘her’ so vividly that they assume she must be a real person.

That said, everyone I know is likely to scrutinise characters in my future stories looking for perhaps just a little of themselves.  I’d suggest that no-one would complain if the subject character had lovely virtues, but no doubt my ears will burn if someone recognises themselves in the scoundrel or other less than desirable character.  Funny that.
