- Who is she?
- Why is she in the story?
- What the future holds?
These are questions that have come to my attention and I’ll do my very best to address them. Sometimes when constructing a story, some characters are planned, and others are not. Connie Fraser first appeared, in my mind, as someone quite different. As I began to write her into On Paid Leave, she became a comfort for my main character, Shawn Angel. If you’ve read my mystery novel, then you’ll know that Shawn suffers from PSTD. She’s hair trigger on her emotions and the least little thing sends her into a swirl of emotions.
- Connie Fraser represents Shawn’s past–a tether to Shawn’s mother. In On Paid Leave, a once upon a day friendship is noted between Connie and Terry Angel (Shawn’s mother). For Shawn, spending a little time with Connie uproots some past feelings for our main girl. It’s a test of her emotions to stay strong and not fall apart, even when memories threaten to overcome her.
- (Spoiler Alert!) Connie is in the story as a basic Red Herring. The story begins with obvious issues with a stalker serial killer, but Shawn is unaware of all the events. Our detective tends to follow any scent of danger or intrigue and the weirdness of the old Fraser family sets off a few alarm bells.
- I see Connie throughout the series. She’s not a front runner character, but she’ll definitely add some peace and perspective to Shawn’s life.
On Paid Leave
Suffering from PTSD with a snarky view of life, Detective Shawn Angel is forced to face her internal demons before she loses her job. When she heads out of town, she plans to conquer fears with a little rest and relaxation, but she’s a trouble magnet. She swears it’s not her fault. It’s almost as if someone is purposefully tormenting her.
Confronted by her past love, Shawn must surrender her pride and work with Leo Grayson. He yanks Shawn out of her safe bubble, complicating matters in his sexy way, yet finding a killer proves to be easier than rekindling their romance. As the intrigue climbs dangerous levels, Shawn tugs on her badass, fully prepared to handle things her way. She’s supposedly on vacation, but now, she’s out to catch a killer…
